Hi! Welcome to Crafting'n'Stuff, my blog about everything crafting-related.
My story
My story
To introduce myself: my name is Marieke, 24 years old, and Dutch. Serving as the proverbial 'big stick' for my challenge, and simply because I enjoy sharing my crafts I started this blog. I also hope that with it I can inspire people and show that everything from sewing to crocheting is not a weird hobby to have for someone in her twenties.
The first time I came into contact with crafts was probably when I was still a sweet little girl. My mum made pretty much all my clothes herself and, being a grand daughter of a tailor, she was very good at it. I, too, wanted to make clothes and, using needle and thread and small scraps of fabric, I created (quite misshapen) clothes for my Barbies.
The real work began a little later. My love for fantasy took my mother and me to the Elf Fantasy Fair in Haarzuilens (the Netherlands) when I was eleven. Several people were dressed in the most beautiful fantasy-like robes and dresses, and the next year, I also wanted a pretty dress. And so it happened; my mum made me a beautiful, dark red, noble woman-like dress. The year thereafter she was again willing to make me a dress, but she warned me: if I wanted one the next year, I had to make it myself (with help, of course).

And so I did. As an earth/forest fairy, the sixteen-year-old me walked around in the garden of a castle in a dress made (almost) all by herself. That was when I got the taste for crafting and I have made my own costume ever since for every Elf Fantasy Fair I went to.

Once I went to university, I learned about the yearly Christmas party organised by the study association where everyone was expected to dress up. Because I never want to wear the same evening dress to the same location twice I wanted a new dress in my third year. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything that both fit me well and that I liked. So, I decided to make my own dress, which resulted in two requests from friends to make their dresses the next year, which I did, of course.

At university I met my best friend, and our shared love for anime and manga took us to AnimeCon in Almelo (the Netherlands). Of course, I did not just need one costume for the two days, but two (according to me, myself and I). At AnimeCon I met my boyfriend and a cosplay couple, with home made costumes, was born.

When my (step) nephew was born I wanted a cute baby shower present. On Pinterest I stumbled upon a cute cuddle toy which turned out to be crocheted. "I can do that", I thought to myself and decided to teach myself how to crochet. The cuddle toy was a great success with the little guy (and his mum) and I really got the taste for crocheting.
That is how I have slowly gotten into the world of crafting and I enjoy making my own stuff more and more. Especially the part where it is possible to create something from (practically) nothing always gives me a great feeling.
About me
Of course, also a short part about me. As I said before, my name is Marieke Eras, I was born on August 29th 1990, so I'm 24 years old. I was born in Soest, a village in the Netherlands. When I went to university I moved to Amstelveen and I loved it so much that I just bought my first house there.
After secondary school I wanted to study Dentistry, but I unfortunately was not selected. I then decided to study Chemistry 'for a year'. The 'year' became six years and now I can call myself Master of Science in Chemistry. During my Masters I found that I did not enjoy doing chemical research and so I decided to do a business/management minor. This eventually led to my first and current job: business/IT consultant.
One of my hobbies is of course crafts. Additionally, I dance ballroom and Latin semi-fanatically and I seems I am a so-called 'gamer girl' (even though I hate the term). In other words: put me behind a computer or console and you won't hear from me for a while.
